Overall, making the target audience to buy the product.''Barnardos" has used the line of appeal which is childhood. they have used this to make the reader to connect with the young child on the front cover and feel sympathy towards it. Modal of address adds to this because it is direct. It shows the big , blue eyes looking straight towards you making you connect with the child.

'Rimmel London' uses expert power. The women ( Kate moss ) is a expert in looking good. This attracts the target audience because it signifies that she only looks good when she uses the mascara which is the product which is being presented to buy. If also uses reward power. The reward of using this product is to look good and beautiful as the expert 'Kate moss' in the advertisement. 'Barnardos' uses coercive power. The child on the front of the advertisement looks scared and lonely. This brings pain and sympathy to the target audience making this ' Coercive power'.

The camera angle used in 'Rimmel London' is low angle shot. It is used to give power to the women of the front as through you are 'looking up to her' and connoting she is some sort of goddess. It uses a close up her face to show the beautiful features of her which attracts both men and women. It also showing her eyelashes where the product is being used. The camera angle used in 'Barnardos' is a close up of the child's face. This is so you can see has big, blue eyes and see the fear which is there again implying sympathy towards the target audience.

In 'Rimmel London' High-Key lighting is used upon her face to lighten up her features so you can see them clearly as she is wearing the product. Low key lghting has been used in the background this is because they didn't want the background to stand out to the reader of the advert. This also can connote that again she is some sort of goddess. In Barnardos low-key lighting is used in the background which could connote the poverty and darkness which prevails the child. However, high-key lighting is used on his face which could signify that there is hope and also it again lights up his eyes which connects with the reader.

In 'Rimmel London' the tag line used is 'Black on Black'. This is used to make a mark in the readers head so that they won't forget the product. Also used repetition so it sticks in the readers mind the key word 'black'. The logo is used in the bottom right of the advertisement it says 'RIMMEL' in block letters so it stands out. It has a 'Crown' image on top of the 'R' to show that it is the Queen of all Make up brands. It is used to make a mark and to present the make as one of the best. The blurb is used to give information about the product a how reliable and good it is. it also there to give more statistic about the product.

In 'Barnardos' the tag line is 'it's just poverty he'll grow out of it'. This stands out seen as though is the biggest size of front of the page. It is used to again make a mark in the readers mind. Blurb is used in the advertisement to give a brief information about what the advertisement is about.

The typography in 'Rimmel London' is very bold and big, especially the tagline. this connotes that if you use the product you can also be bold and big. The name of the product is in red to attract the reader. This also signifies that red connotes love and dangers which attracts the reader.

The typography in 'Barnardos' is all white. This could connote plainness and seriousness. the size of the tagline is bold and big to make the reader catch his/her eyes on to the advert.

In 'Rimmel London' the modes of address is direct and formal. By it being direct it is connecting and engaging with the reader by the womens attractive eyes. this also make her eyelashes stand out showing how good the product is. By the advert being formal it shows in thier case women being sophisticated again engaging the audience.

In 'Barnardos' the modes of address is again direct and formal . the direct address is used to connect the reader to the childs eye and to show fear which is in his eyes creating sympathy in the hearts of the reader. The formal address is used to engage the reader by it being serious implying that the reader has to do something about it.

There is a good variety of symbolic and cultural codes in the advertisement. Kate Moss is wearing a black leather jacket. This is a symbolic code which could connote the 'Bad Girl' image of her and also signifies some connotations of rebellion. The colour of the background contains red. The is a symbolic code which could connote danger of the character.

The gratification theory can be applied to the Rimmel london advert. The Diversion is that the advert takes you away from real life and makes the product look dangerous this could show the reader a different and dangerous lifestyle. The reader may feel some sort of personal identity to the advert as they all identify with the task of putting on make and trying to look sexy. The adverts also satisfies the audiences need for surveillance as it gives us some information about the product including a statistic. It could be argued that the banardos advertisement satisfies our need for diversion as it shows plight of the someone who has had a tough and rough lifestyle.

Intertextuality in the Rimmel advert helps us to think of Kate Moss as the 'BadGirl' image which the company is trying to protray. This is because various films which is the gerne of Action include rebellious characters wearing leather jacket. Her direct mode of address also features in posters for action films suggesting the advert is exciting and dangerous. Such as this poster for this action film:

The Rimmel and Barnardo's adverts both use techniques common in print advertising. The main similarity is the camera angles used in adverts. The camera angle used is a close up on the main character. Another way they reflect common codes and conventions is the direct modal of address used in both adverts. They both have used this to connect and engage with readers. Finally, the last similarity is the colour code used in both adverts. They both use dark colours to make the adverts serious and very formal. To conclude both of the adverts use the technical codes of each company. They provide the logo both in the bottom right of their advertisements and they both also provide a blurb to give knowledge about the product which is being advertised or even the company.

Homework - Print Advertisement

The print advertisement I have chosen is one which advertises a takeaway. The font of the title is Hugh and big and it has a outer glow. The colour of the font which is red connotes the sauces and the spiciness of the foods which can be found at the takeaway. The title also uses a superlative which is 'best'. This signify that this takeaway is the best out of all of the other one. The mode of colours on the advert is a signifier which connotes the foods which are found there. Such as; 'Curries' which is in red which relates to the spices and the colour of curries, 'Burgers' is in the colour green which connotes the salad found in a burger, 'Kebabs' is in a brownish, gold colour which implies the colour of a kebab. A other technique which the advertisement use is temptation. By this they have used images of Pizzas and Burgers to show the delicious food which is at the takeaway. This would get the attention of many hungry readers and they would order by seeing the lovely, delicious food. Overall, print advertising is one of the best advertising used in the advertising business.

Homework - Despicable Me

How the Sound used in The Trailer?

In the trailer the sound is used with perfection and accurately to ensure full impact to the trailer. The Sound at the start of the trailer is non-diegetic sound. It starts off in a quiet tone whilse the person walks in the door. It increases in sound volume to build up tension after freezing the customers in the shop. While he walks to the last person at the till the music is very loud. This implies tension to build up. However, the music soon stops dramatically and the diegetic sound of the coin dropping into the 'tips' jar. This makes the tension drop and creates humour in the trailer. Throughout the trailer the music creates the atmosphere of the scene such as humour or action. The Music is in the background throughout the trailer however quiets down when diagetic sound is used to create an atmosphere or the genre of the movie. This is easily identified as comedy clearly done by the music timing and the non-diegetic sound used. Overall, the music in the trailer is used carefully and effectively to create a brilliant, enjoyable trailer.

Production Work

Homework: Write a paragraph explaining why the reebok advertisement was banned.

In my view, i think the advertisement was banned for many different reason. Firstly, because the portrayal of 50 cent which is as a 'Cool' survivor of gun crime which gives a bad impression towards children who want to buy Reebok. Another reason was that the signifiers which was used to connote that violence is something to laugh about it. The signifier is when 50 cent laughs about violence connoting that violence is cool and calm if you wear Reebok. Again which portrays 50 cent as a bad role model. The main impression of the advertisment is that it show a glamorised gun culture. This could encourage violence or make violence acceptable. By showing the violence which had occured in 50 cent life could of likely to be interpreted by younger viewers as suggesting this type of lifestyle was something to look up to. As people of this age are especially susceptible to external influences on thier behaviour. These were the main complaints and was why the advertisment was bannned.

Homework- Secondary Research

In the advertisement there are many lines of appeal. However the are lines of appeal which are more appealing to the a certain type of audience. A line of appeal is the factory. It is set out in a fun and lively environment. The music added to the advertisement is a signifier which connotes a happy tone towards it. This is aimed at children. A line of persuasion could be at the end of the advert where the laptop is wrapped like a sweet connoting that the laptop is as nice as a sweet and addicting as them. A line of appeal could be the song which is used. If the viewer is enjoying the song they will concentrate on the advert and would probably interested. The song used is a well known classic therefore many viewers enjoy it. Another line of appeal could be the different colours shown which can be purchased for the laptop. The colours shown are the ordinary; pink, red, blue etc. This could be appealing towards female viewers because of the colourful laptops. Females are more interested in colours then Males therefore this would be appealing.

Extension:

I think the 'Dell' advertisement reverts to 'Mainstreamers'. This is because they are very well known and the adverts show the best of the product. Also they have value of money such as; at the end of the advertisment it shows the money in a star shape and it says 'Only' above it suggesting it is very cheap. Therefore this advert is to seek security.

Lauren Brennan, 14 Pudsey.

Cadburys eyebrows.

Lauren likes to see good looking men in adverts as they catch her eye and make it interesting. She sometimes likes to have a narrative unless it gets boring. Lauren likes to see celebrities because they are sometimes a good role model and make good impressions towards the product. The advert that has caught my eye in the past is the B N B N advert because it has a catchy tune :)

The factors of persuasion which has been used by hermeren are that if you have a honda you will have a postive benefit. This is reward power.

Target Audience of this advert could be towards vehicles fans. They can be presuade by the different lines of appeals.

Fezan Mazhar, 12, Student, Calverley
Favourite Advert: Babies RollerBlade advert.

Fezan likes to see funny characters in adverts, ones that make him laugh. He doesnt generally like seeing celebrites in adverts but he doesnt mind if they are. He likes narrative in adverts so that the advert makes sense and it is easier to understand the product. Adverts which have caught Fezans eye in the past have been the 'Dell' advert mainly because of the music which has been used in it. He says the music adds alot more enjoyment to the advert and alot more understanding.

Advert Proposal

Our idea is to advertise Usher however we want to in co-operate Coca Cola into the advert. There are two ways where we can do this. Our idea was to have usher being really stiff and not be able to dance. However, he see the Coke and drinks it and is able to dance and is really flexible. On the other hand we had a other idea, that usher is really thirsty and drinks the coke connoting the Cokes out of the world with taste.

Advert Treatment

I have chosen the 1st idea as my proposal. I believe my advert has the following lines of appeal, elite people along with successful careers. This is to give the viewer something to keep tune in for in our case the females. It has this of appeal because in my advert Usher is there to keep the viewers tuned in to the advert especially the fans of Usher. I also hope to reflect the line of appeal glamorous places as i will include Usher being in a vila or some glamorous place in a hot country. My advert will have the following factors of persuasion; reward power and expert power. I will use these factors of persuasion because this will engage the audience throughout the advert and persuades the viewers to buy the product.

My primary target audience for my advert is people who are into modern music such as R n B and also likes coca cola. I will also have a secondary target audience of my advert is the parents of the teenagers to make sure the music used in the advert is suitable and also so to check of the soft drink (Coca Cola) is not too unhealthy. There are a variety of camera shots going to be in my advert and some of them are: low angle shots of usher feet dancing- this is because it gives the effect of Usher being a great dancer and gives more of a impact and a close up of the brilliant dance which Usher pulls off.

The main characters in my advert are Usher so show his dancing. I have chosen to represent the characters in this way as to promote Usher dancing and also to give the reward power of that usher gets all his strength from the soft drink 'Coca Cola'. The advert will have many sounds included to support the images, these includes the music of Usher again to promote the new single from him.
